Introduction
My name is Melanie C. Lewis. I am a graduate student at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) where I am pursuing a master's degree in School Administration.
Educational Background
From 1987 to 1991, I attended UNC-CH and worked towards a bachelor's of arts in education.
During this time I qualified for membership into Phi Beta Kappa. In 1992, I began
working on a master's degree in mathematics education at North Carolina State University (NCSU) on a part-time basis. I completed the program requirements at NCSU
and received my diploma in the summer of 1995. While at NCSU, I earned membership
into the honor society Phi Kappa Phi.
Teaching Experience
After earning my undergraduate degree in 1991, I began teaching high school mathematics
in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. I served as a mathematics teacher at this school
for four years. I taught various levels of math, ranging from pre-algebra to Algebra III. Currently, I am teaching undergraduate mathematics classes at UNC-CH.
Extracurricular Duties
During my last two years at Fuquay-Varina High School (FVHS), I served as lead junior
class sponsor. My main duty in this position was to organize the junior-senior prom.
I had the opportunity to serve on the school's Hospitality Committee. I co-sponsored the Quiz Bowl team, and I coordinated the after school tutorial program.
Career Goals
I have arranged to serve as an administrative intern at Athens Drive High School in
Raleigh, NC for the 1996-1997 school year. After completing my internship and my
graduate studies in school administration next spring, I plan to work as an assistant
principal in a public high school in North Carolina. After working in the schools as
a principal, I would like to return to the college environment and serve as a professor
of school administration or mathematics education.
