Susan Slayton is a first-year student in the Masters in School Administration program
in Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She
is also a recipient of the Principal Fellows scholarship loan, a program offering
assistance to students seeking a master's degree in school administration in order to
practice as a public school administrator in North Carolina.
Prior to attending UNC-CH, Susan was employed by Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools
as a seventh-grade language arts teacher at Phillips Middle School. In addition
to teaching, she was also the team leader for a group of core subject teachers, as
well as a member of the school's management team.
A former Virginian, Susan taught in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was employed by Lynchburg
City Schools as an English teacher. Here she taught grades 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 over
a period of five years. While employed with Lynchburg City Schools, she earned a
masters of education degree with an English specialization from Lynchburg College.
While at Lynchburg College, she was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an international
honor society.
Susan's undergraduate work was done at Averett College in Danville, Virginia. At
Averett she earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and Mass Communications and
was also certified to teach on the secondary level. She was also inducted into Alpha
Chi, a national honor society.
In addition to teaching on the secondary level, Susan has also taught at the community
college level. Employed by Durham Technical Community College for four years, she
taught a variety of writing classes, including communication skills and essay writing.
Future goals for Susan include starting a new profession as an assistant principal
upon completion of the program at UNC-CH. As a school administrator, her hope is
to effect change for the segments of society in greatest need, the segments that
are often overlooked.
