GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The goal of this course is to introduce you to the logic and language of social science research, its inquiry procedures and techniques, and how to interpret and explain research results. You will thereby acquire the framework within which you can conduct school-based inquiry. This goal calls for the development of the highest levels of cognitive learning, creative application and judgment. Consequently, the course relies heavily on exercises involving application of concepts, both individually and in small groups. Each chapter of The Practice of Social Research has review questions and exercises. These questions/exercises along with others that I will distribute throughout the course will constitute the universe of questions/exercises that will serve to focus our in-class discussions. The major excercise is the production of a research or evaluation proposal in both written and oral form where you must apply the logic and language of social science research to a concrete problem/program in K-12 education.
