The AutoAuditorium System for televising lectures |

I would like to make you aware of the AutoAuditorium System, a
technology that could have a very positive impact on the availability
of Distance Education. In a nut shell ...
Create Auditorium and Classroom Videos Without a Crew!
The AutoAuditorium System turns an ordinary auditorium, lecture hall or
classroom into one that automatically makes broadcasts and recordings of
lectures and talks. Permanently installed in the room, it uses cameras and
microphones to be "aware" of what is happening on stage. It televises the most
common auditorium talk: people speaking on stage, showing slides to a local
audience.
Because the system is completely automatic, the people on stage and in the
local audience are not distracted. To remote audiences, an AutoAuditorium
program is usually indistinguishable from one produced by a crew.
Easy and economical to use, it is used often. Thus many more people can avoid
traveling, or missing talks because of a schedule conflicts. Classes taught
in one location can be telecast to other locations and/or recorded for later
use.
IBM TJ Watson Research has three systems in use. They published a paper in
January 2001 saying that they were creating video for their e-Seminar service
at the rate of 5 - 10 hours per week. Since then, their use has increased.
They created 150 AutoAuditorium videos in 2002, which grew to 233 in 2003.
Boeing also has a system, used to send presentations from Seattle around the
country.

In April 2012 Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology each contributed $30 million to form edX as a nonprofit partnership offering free massively open online courses (MOOCs) from both universities to begin fall, 2012. Courses consist of short videos, problem sets, and student study groups using forum, wikis, and Facebook. Students who pass the exams obtain a certificate but not course credit from either institution. The first five courses will be offered Fall, 2012 as open access courses; thereafter, certificates may be obtain for successful completion for a cost. edX will offer courses in the humanities and the sciences. Anant Agarwal, edX president, said that 120 universities are interested in joining the partnership. The intent is to build a global community of online learners and to research teaching methods and technologies. Courses will vary in length. edX is in discussions with the American Council on Education to determine the creditworthiness of its courses. |

Coursera, a for-profit MOOC (but current courses [as of August 2012], was launched April 2012 by two computer science professors at Stanford, Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, in the belief that the Internet should afford millions to obtain elite educations at no cost. Funded from New Enterprise Associates and Kleiner Perkins (for $16 million). As of December 3. 2012, volunteer professors from 33 top tier universities including Stanford, Princeton, Pennsylvania, UC-Berkeley, Virginia, and Michigan are offering over 200 courses with homework assignments, examinations, and grades in the sciences, humanities, and the social sciences. As of Fall 2012 course enrollment reached 1.3 million students from 196 countries. Courses typically consist of shore video lectures, automatically graded tests or problem sets, a Q&A forum, online communities that allow students to work through concepts they don't understand and an online forum where they can submit questions to the teaching staff. Topics range from poetry to probability. Students don't receive academic credit or have access to university resources. However, Coursera has enagaged the American Council on Education to evaluate the credit-worthiness of its courses. |

Former Stanford professor Sebastian Thrun, impressed when 160,000 students signed up for his fall 2011 artificial intelligence course, left Stanford to start Udacity in January 2012 with his colleague, Peter Norvig. Focus: computer science, math, and science open self-paced courses that include short videos, quizzes, problem sets, a wiki and forum, and a teaching assistant. Exams are offered every eight weeks. In June 2014, Udacity announced a partnership with Pearson Vue, a worldwide provider of testing services, where students can take a final examination under proctored conditions for official Udacity credit. As of October 2012 some 800,000 students were enrolled in 16 online courses. Udacity has awarded 50,000 certificates of completion and has placed 20 students in jobs (for which Udacity received compensation from the companies). In the future, students may be assessed $100 in tuition for a masters degree. |

It is pursuing regional and national accreditation. WEU focuses on educating historically underserved popiulations in high-poverty communities and in developing nations. It is a free non-profit/for-profit institution. That is to say, for students, it is free, but they earn their tuition by responding to advertisers who pay WEU to be able to market to WEU students. In addition, governments or private industry (e.g., insurance companies) provide financial support for the development of particular degree programs. Enrollments are open (i.e., students start at the time and date of their choosing) and students can proceed through courses at their own speed. Students take a cognitive assessment test that determines how material is presented in courses based on their learning style. Students are required to sign a "give back pledge" where they agree to do good work with their free education. The "pay it forward" mission is part of every course. Peer-to-peer learning is emphasized, with faculty members serving as facilitators. |
